To me, Yugi's win over Atem seemed contrived. Basically, Takahashi favored Yugi over Atem, so wrote the duel so that he won. Yugi relies on Atem almost exclusively to duel for him for the first 2/3 of the manga, then all of a sudden, he's good enough to beat Atem and is immediately crowned the new King of Games while Atem's sent packing to the afterlife. To me, it seems like the author picked one as his favorite and just wrote it that way, logical progression be damned.

Yugi sure had come a long way, I can say that much..but like you alluded to, Takahashi had his way how he wanted the series to end, which was Atem's spirit being released..seems like writers/creators of fandoms are always doing that, going the bittersweet route when there are other possibilities to explore, regardless of logic or consistencies.

Yugi did indeed. I can accept him standing beside Atem as an equal. However, that one duel was not enough to convince me that he "surpassed" Atem.
